Gti 6 Baffled Sump

Recommended Posts

vickiw106

I have got a baffled sump from a gti6 engine that I ran on a xu5 1600 engine that span a bearing on crank.

Now I am not sure if it was just bad luck or something to do with the gti 6 baffled sump.

Has anyone had any experience with running this kind of sump on the XU engine?

Or know anything about them

Thanks for looking

Ian

Yes they work absolutely fine, and no, the spun shell wouldn't have been as a result of the sump.

I've run XU10 baffled sumps on 1.6, 1.9 and Mi16 engines without any issue at all.

It is an XU sump!

As far as I know its no deeper than the usual XU5 steel one, though is deeper than a 205 XU9 engine because it used a spacer/stiffener plate and a shallower sump.

Yup, same depth as a 1.6 steel sump, and the same depth as the 1.9 8v/Mi16 sump and spacer combined.

I'm assuming a xsara VTS sump will be the same as this?

If I fit it to a standard 1.9 will I need to remove the spacer plate it currently has?

Are they are direct replacement or does anything need changing?

Yes, Xsara VTS sump is the same as GTi-6 and other late "winged" XU10 sumps

It is a direct replacement for the standard 1.9 GTi sump, but you will need to remove the spacer plate (unless you're using a Petert extended oil pump) and use the XU10 sump bolts.

Fit the matching oil pump baffle while you're there.

The oil temp sensor is on the front of the sump and has a different connector to the standard XU9 one. You just need to connect the oil temp wire to one of the two pins and it'll work fine - I can't remember which of the two pins it is now, but easy enough to check with a multimeter - one will be open circuit between the pin and casing, which is the one you don't want, and one will give a resistance that varies with temperature, which is the one you do want.

does it make a difference that the gti-6 sump is a bigger capacitiy, after fitting the gti-6 sump it needed over 5ltrs of oil to register half way up the dip stick.

my only concern is that if there is to much oil in the engine it will force its way past the rings and start smoking.

thanks

No. Go have a read in here; you'll learn a great deal.

There's a section on oil systems which has all of your answers.

Over-filling is completely different to having more oil on the first place.

Hi all,

Baffling the sump on my S16 seems to be the last thing on the list before I'm track ready.

Can I just check with you that these pics are a GTI-6 sump and that it'll be a straight swap?

I've also just spotted this thread and now I'm well confused. I deffo want to be sure I'm doing the right thing here :P

Thanks!

yes it is and yes it will fit, you will need to trim off the A/C pump tabs for the Alternator bracket to bolt back on though.

I have a Baffled S16 sump on my gti6 :P

Ah, OK. I was wondering what all that was.

S16 sumps aren't baffled as standard right? I'd be gutted if I took mine off to find I didn't actually need to bother

Huh, ok. That might mean I'm good to go already then. Does it depend on their age? I guess I'm after a way to know for sure without removing it (soooo many bolts)

every Alloy one I;ve seen has been, the Early Tin sumps of around 92 didn;t have it but the fittings where there to fit it in

I need an x-ray camera....

I guess I ought to go under the assumption that mine doesn't have a baffle. Best not to risk it.
