Making A Tu3 Into Xs Spec, What Parts Do I Need?

Recommended Posts

Toilet Duck

OK I've got a 1990 205 CJ, and I've been doing some reading, from what I understand it should be kicking out about 70 BHP, and the XS engine kicks out about 85 BHP, so assuming the bottom end is essentially the same engine. So what different parts are available to claw a few extra horses? I'm looking to eventually end up with a nice reliable fast road spec engine.

I've read that the XS has a different camshaft, Solex carb, and maybe a different inlet manifold? As well as a differently ratio'd gearbox.

Am I on the right track here? or is there anything else I'll be wanting to fit?

Also are all heads created equally on the TU3 engines or do certain engines have larger valves than others?

As for exhaust manifolds, how good is the standard one? or is there a prefered upgrade?

i did the same thing at the weekend with a gtx single point injection.

you need the cylinderhead and everything that bolts onto it, from an xs or citroen ax gt (same engine), that is, the cylinder head, with camshaft, distributor, fuel pump, inlet manifold and carb.

not only do you get the extra power, but it raises the red line to 7000 rpm. i think the cj had the same gearing as the xs, but had a 65 bhp version of the engine, so the difference should be even more dramatic !

I like the sound of that!

Is the head alloy? as in does it need skimming prior to fitting?

I assume everything just bolts on?

its no more work than doing the head gasket, (it goes without saying you need a new cylinderhead gasket and bolts)

yes its an alloy head and its the same 9.3 to one compression ratio so doesnt need skimming (unless its been roasted)

they are getting hard to get now, so if you see a citroen ax gt or 205 xs in the scrappies get the headoff it and leave all the bits bolted on.

some late moder 309 1.4's and early citroen zx's had the same spec engine. look for a twin choke carb and 3s cast into the head between the exhaust manifold and timing belt.

i got one of an ax gt from my local scrappies for £20 about a year ago, with manifolds, carb, coil and distributor..................... :)
