Yes you can, you'll need a gearbox attached so you can fit a starter motor.

Thanks for the reply Tom,

would you then put battery straight to the starter to turn it over and get results

Thats pretty much it yes. Normally you would comp test an engine when hot, so bear in mind that the results might be slightly lower than you'd expect as the engine is cold.

Hi Tom, I was having a chat about this today at work and thought id see what you or others thought,

1) Is it possible to do build enough compession to test by just turning over the crank by hand (with bar and socket), i was`nt sure about this but sat there politely

2) I was asked why i needed to put a gear box on to do this and thought id just ask to confirm

Is there such a thing as a tea room mechanic, there seems to be at my work, Id rather take advice from people i know have done this or know for fact unlike these two i have to call work colleagues

thanks

Gary

Gear box needed to bolt starter to!

Plenty of tea room mechanics, have 2 in my office. One is a girl who claims to be able to "service and maintain" any car - including her car that just failed MOT on headlight alignment, which she then paid the garage to sort...

1, I doubt it, would be bloody hard work if you tried

2, The starter motor bolts to the gearbox's bellhousing on an XU engine, hence the need to bolt a gearbox on.

If the starter bolted to the engine then you could do without a gearbox, this is quite rare in my experience though, only one I remember coming across happens to be a Peugeot/Renault V6, makes gearbox changes a little easier :)
