Best Place To Get Exhaust Tubing?

Recommended Posts

Rallyvan

Iv got a 205 with a 306td engine in and have decided to get rid of the standard backbox, therefore needing a section of exhaust from the mid section to the tip (about 2 foot section)

But the question i have is does any1 know where i can get a section of exhaust pipe from? Cheers

Any rude boy exhaust shop, or ebay.

will it need bending? it's a bit pikey, but you can sometimes find stuff in the piles of scrap systems that exhaust fitters collect (with permission, of course). or stainless system fabricators; they might even bend it for you

personally I'd get rid of the centre silencer if it has one rather than the rear box, much easier to do as well as not affecting the noise levels quite as much :D

This is what i usually do. :D

Exhaust places are usually quite freindly and willing to let me have a quick rumage.

Once went to get a piece of pipe for a quick repair to the mid section on my 205 and found a 205 mid section with nothing wrong with it, Bar a bit of surface rust that is. :)

Yep! Straight tube amplifies sound waves so if you remove the rear silencer it's going to drone like a bitch and probably make you feel ill on motorways. If you have to bad-boy up your exhaust then remove the centre silencer.

Im not trying to 'badboy' the exhaust, but when i put the td engine in the 205 i was told to leave the back box off and just have the middle box, but obviously u guys are saying do it the other way round :)

In my younger days of knowing no better I took the backbox off my 306 diesel that I converted to turbo diesel, and fitted a cut down 405 Mi16 downpipe as a rear "box". It worked OK and wasn't as loud as you might think.

I am considering butchering the backbox on my TD, as part of my intercooler mod that I plan to do this year.

It seems everything I've read on the subject suggest that the exhaust on the TD's should provide no back-pressure. My downpipe looks to be around 2", maybe slightly more, then the backbox is more like 1 1/4".Therefore I think must be restrictive.

Please post photos Rallyvan when you get round to it.

Will be following with interest. :)

It won't be "loud" as such, it will just be very very low frequency and loud. If you did it to a petrol engine then it would roar, if you did it to a diesel it would drone as the frequencies are much lower. Hence me saying it might make you feel ill!

yup, I know the drone from when the backbox rotted away on mum's 405, new o.e type backbox and was back to a normal note.

when the centre section and silencer gave up it was replaced with a straight pipe from an N/A diesel due to supply issues, and it spools up much better but isn't at all noticeably noisier.
