Gearbox Up The Chuff?

Recommended Posts

allye

On my way back from North Wales tonight I stopped to go for a wiz of the M6 (a section was closed for one night on the 6th helpfully!) and went over a very small bump, where two pieces of tarmac meet. Then when i went to pull off the gearbox made a knocking noise and the gear lever now pulls to the left violently in every gear when using anything more than a tiny bit of throttle and vibrates. However calms down at crusing speed, about 60mph thankfully so i managed to get back to Wiltshire. If the gearbox dead? mount?

Cheers, Ali

Could be the mount as you say, could also be the O/S driveshaft intermediate bearing, as when they start to give up they give similar symptoms.

I'd have a look at the mount first, theres a good chance you've pulled one of the captive nuts out.

managed to snap 2 of the 3 bolts off the left hand mount some how. Got it on the ramo today and jack the engine up, mount out, snapped bolts out (using welder haha) new bolts and re-tapped holes with some glue as well so it shouldn't happen again. Nothing else damaged amazingly.

More amazingly was the egine was being held in by just a couple of threads on 1 bolts when I got it on the ramp! Lucky doesn't do it justice.

Narrow escape mate!

I've just fitted a Grp N gearbox mount yesterday.

Glad you got it sorted
