Random Engine Cut Outs

Recommended Posts

alfer

Hi

(i have searched and none of the posts which i found had the same symptoms.)

Ok, Since the cold weather has come so from about October the car starts up fine. when the engine gets up to temp and you are coming to a junction when you depress the clutch after slowing up to stop 70% of the time it will just cut out. (not a stall before any cheeky bugger says so  ) Till now I have just ignored it as im rebuilding in the next few weeks.

Car G reg 1.9gti (non cat) Idols at 950rpm

other than this it runs fine and pulls like a mule.

Any idea's would greatly appreciated as its on the list of to do jobs.

cheers

Pete

Fairly common I think, was happening to mine. I took the throttle body off and gave it a good clean, paying particular attention to the idle bypass passage and brass screw. This solved it.

Here's my original thread with a very helpful post from MerlinGTI:

I would check the adjustment and operation of the throttle switch, connect a multimeter to terminals 18 and 2 on the switch, the switch should be giving a 0 reading when closed and infinity as it clicks open.

then between 3 and 18 you should get infinity until you reach WOT where you should get a reading of Zero.

3 is the top terminal, 18 the centre one, 2 the bottom one.

get yourself a Haynes Workshop manual, there's tons of technical info like this that'll help you, probably only get one from a charity shop second hand bookshop or ebay and the likes, they went out of print and were replaced by the rather poor Service and repair manual.

also browse the articles on the main site, I think there are a few that will help you there too.
