Oil Coolers & Hoses

Recommended Posts

im running out of space in the front of my car and currently have a dimma kit fitted.

I would like to fit my oil cooler in the "vent" just behind the driver/passenger door on the rear quarter. would this cause an issue with such a long oil pipe? i think two small 120mm computer fans would work well for drawing air through the heat exchanger.

Hi James,

It,s a great place to mount your cooler and will see quite a large amount of air if you can seal it in there and duct your air channel nicley.

Couple of important things to bear in mind here are that your cooler must have an adequate exhaust for the hot air to flow away uninhibited (very important that). And as far as the hose size goes you should realy be using somthing in the order of 5/8" and idealy an oil thermostat also which should be mounted as close to the engine as possible.

Dont be tempted to use a 1/2" hose as its not going to flow very quickly over the extra distance and the situation will be compounded on the return from the cooler where the oil temprature will be at it's lowest...5/8" is the way to go on a long run like yours for best results and longevity.

It can be suprising the amount of time taken to prime a long run like that especialy on larger hose so before you fire it up it's a good idea to use a funnell and fill the cooler and hose with oil prior to fire up.It can be messy but it's worth it.

I dont think you will need the fans personaly James unless you find your oil temprature is high at standstill which is possible after a hard pounding and then coming to a rest imidiatley but not very likley in most circumstances, and also computer fans dont flow at a very high rate so could well start to undo your good work at higher speeds where you need it most by creating a restriction behind the cooler core.

All the best

O.T.
