Pace Dry Sump Advice

Recommended Posts

maxirallye

Hi, I am looking to order the Pace dry sump system for my XU10J4 mi16 rally engine. Pace only list the system for the alloy block mi16's. I am assuming that the sumps are interchangable between these two engines, and this system will fit my iron block mi?

Can aybody confirm this prior to me placing my order!

many thanks, Tony

Best thing I found Tony without sounding patronising is give the guys at Pace a ring. I have always found them helpfull whenever I have had any queries. Oh and if you do go that route let me know as I have bought a dozen of the Pump Belts as that is the minimum order!

sumps are interchangeable, crank timing belt sprocket is the same though the axillary pulley bolted to it is different, but I think this might not matter as the pace drive belt bolts on in the centre of it.

Spot on, it is indeed.

Im sure they do a diff sump for an xu10 as when i was having problems with mine they would always ask what type i had.

When i had the set up i had nothing but bother with it the final straw was getting a stone wedge in the belt nearly ripping it in half so my advice would be to make a belt cover for the oil pump. I spoke to many people at races / rallys most of them were problem free but you got the odd one that were also not pleased with it.

This was the issue I was concerned about when I went to see them a couple of years back. They didn't seem too worried about it being exposed. When your spending that sort of money/time/effort, you don't want stones throwing the belt off and leaving you in the same position as if you hadn't bothered. After all, nobody would recommend running with the cambelt cover off for track use, if you're going to be visiting a gravel trap atall.

I think a Tarmac sump guard and the standard factory fitted wheelarch s*it guard would help keep the belt safe, though i;ve never seen one up close to see how much clearance there is in a 205.

All the kits I think I seen have been in Mk2 escorts with Vauxhall engines :P

Thanks for the replys guys, I will be ringing Pace on Monday. car will be running a sump guard so should give the belt some protection, I will look into the possability of some sort of further shielding.

Many thanks, Tony

Here is a few pics of when i use to run it on my 1.9 engine this should show how exsposed the belt is.

Also make sure you get the pace easy clean tank as the baffles are totaly different than the other makes.

Thanks for the pictures Dan. spoke to Pace today, they do do two kits so no issue fitting to the iron block mi16. Not kept in stock tho, need to phone back tomorrow to see if they will do a production run just for one order!

Ref the oil tank, I currently have one supplied and modified by Colin Satchell to fit in the Nav footwell, can just make the enclosure out in the attached pic.

Yes, that it! Standard engine lasted all of 10 minutes before surge killed it, bummer ras had Colin there for the day for testing, rear suspension set up etc :) Previous MASS engine spun a shell due to surge at Caerwent rally. Dry sump looks to be the only definative solution.

Will upload a pic when back at home on my own PC!

Cheers,

Dont forget your need an oil cooler, pipe work, unions, tank, catch tank, blanks for current oil breathers and 10L of oil so id budget £1500-£2000 to get it done unless you can pic up the bits second hand :(

I was aware of that but thanks any way,

i hope know one minds me asking this, its along the same lines a the OP so still relevant

I know you have to block up the crank and cam breathers, but why? I always assumed the breathers were there to cope with the displacement of air caused by the pistons, and the ones in the cam cover to allow the oil to drain freely, so if they are blocked up surely there would be pressure in the crank case? which in turn would cause oil to `blow` past oil seals??

I must be wrong otherwise they wouldn't do it.....

Paul.

All the crank case presure gets bled out on your return pipe to the tank, you can fit a catch tank to the engine but you will need to fit a one way valve so the pump cant suck air in. I cant remember the ins and out but i think this is to make the pump scavenge properly and not "airate" the oil.

Hi, price from Pace was just over £800 plus Vat, basically for sump pan and pump. All fittings, pipework, remote oil filter take-off, tank etc etc extra.

Cheers,
