Smokey And The Bandit

Hey Guys,

Having got my XS running, it has decided to start smoking faily badly, the smoke apears about 20 secconds after being started and then does not go away, it is a very light grey color, it is there at idle, and get worse when driving,

i initialy thought it may be a HG problem, but it shows equal compression on all 4 cylinders, and the smoke is not white, just a very light grey, the engine also starts, runs and idle perfectly

I also though it could be crap in the exhuast, but after giving it a declent lenght drive everything should now have been burnt off,

So what i am now thinking is, could it be over fueling? if it is it must be taking in alot of fuel!

The only other isue with the engine is there is a small hole in the exhaust manifol, could this be drawing in moisture and turning it into steem maybe??

Thanks in advance

Paul.

Fuel is very possible, have a look at the colour of the plugs, if they are sooty black then its well on the rich side.

The exhaust does smell of fuel, i cant smell any coolant, and posibly a hint of oil, but i dont have the best nose when it comes to spot that smell

Tom, thats a very good (and obvious :) ) point, will they still be sooted up even if it has not been running for very long (20 mins max?)

Thanks

Paul.

have you just done the head gasket ? if so the exhaust may be full of oil and coolant, can take 20 miles plus to burn of.

just you said that its ok for the fist few mins, then the smoke starts, could be when the exhaust gets hot..............
