DamirGTI 340 Posted February 3, 2010 (edited) I have a few set of them "oval" ones .. cos of crap bumpy roads over here The hole where the ball joint goes inside goes oval , you can spot that by looking at the gap on the split part on the lower end of the hub - if its narrow , if the gap is smaller than say 3 to 5mm's it'll be crap i.e. it wont hold the ball joint inside no matter how much you tight the pinch bolt .. though it's worth to try anyway , some of the narrow ones might still be useable and will hold the ball joint tightly (but not for too long ..) Will try to dig a few pics of good un's and bad un's .. Damir EDIT : bad (take a look at the gap) good Edited February 3, 2010 by DamirGTI

2-Pugs 57 Posted February 3, 2010 Thanks for explaining that Damir, I have often wondered too. So, here's a question...if you had an 'ovalled' hub where there is no 'pinch' gap left, could you machine the slot back out to, lets say 3-5mm and then use it? Sounds dodgy I know, just a hypothetical question
DamirGTI 340 Posted February 3, 2010 NO !!! tried that , and it's ended up split apart (completly) while tightening the pinch bolt luckily it didn't went during the driving .. it could though , and it would be of course - nasty ! Only replacement with good un .. no grinding no welding at least not for me .. Damir
SurGie 54 Posted February 4, 2010 (edited) Great stuff DamirGTI What could make the ova-ling happen ? Edited February 4, 2010 by SurGie
pug_ham 243 3 Cars Posted February 4, 2010 What could make the ova-ling happen ? Poor mechanicing when splitting the hub from the wishbone / balljoint, failure to replace the through bolt everytime (or using decent quality plain bolts to start with) & over tightening the bolt imo.
