Classic Cars

Hey guys

 

I have been looking around the net, reading articles and waching some videos on the likes of Top Gear and Fifth gear talking about classic cars. Both Tv shows talk about allot of great classic cars that deserve the title of being classic, but yet i havent seen allot of credid handed over to the 205?

 

Sure Fifth Gear and Top Gear have talked about it once, Fifth Gear when comparing the 205 GTI to the 207 GTI and Top Gear when thay were talking about the T16, which was more about the T16 then the comman GTI, and classic buying guyd for classic cars never mention the 205 GTI.

 

Which got me to wonder...is the 205 GTI not yet a classic?

I feel like its classic, or is going to be a classic in this year or the next....but i dont know....what do you guys think?

Is our beloved 205 about to get some respect?

Have Peugeot maby ruined the 205s opertunity to become classic with there arty designs and poor mechanics (the newer models that is)?

The 205 is certainly on its way, if not already, a modern classic.

 

Certainly there have been quite a few articles in the likes of Practical Classics etc, although of course they'll be people who'll see them as too new to be a "proper" classic

I reckon they can be classed as classics, all this not old enough to be a proper classic, mines in its 23rd year and still going strong!

Don't forget that although the 205 first came out in 1983 it was still being produced as late as 1997, so it's often seen as being too modern for classic status. It'll be a while before it goes down as a classic properly.

Well its about 15 years since the last GTi was registered and my 205 GTi is insured by a classic car insurance company, which

only insures cars as classic when they reach 15 years old.

 

IMO :( the 205 GTi is already a modern classic car, still whom decides what is classic or modern like what they do with antiques ?

 

(edit> Its about time the 205 got some respect, for sure)

Needs constant attention to run properly

Engine bay not hidden in plastic

Can access head lamp bulbs without stripping down engine

Some say it needs to have chrome on to be a classic.

 

Mines on classic insurance though :lol:

I don't know how things looks in legal system in UK but in Poland to register 205 as a Classic Car, car has to be checked by a special person who is checking how much of the car is still original. I think if the value is less then something like 96% of the car, car can't be insured as a classic. Also every time you want to do some kind of repair or upgrade you have to report it to the special "branch" who is looking after things like that.

 

Basicly you need to have a full original car, (definitely without Mi16 on it, etc) , properly mantained , parts has to be replaced with only Peugeot original parts etc...

 

But as I said , this is like that in Poland, I wonder how different it is in England ?

Very, they class an Austin Allegro as a classic here!

 

Well I reckon mine is, I've even done an article for the BMW Car Clubs mag under the guise of 'my other classic' 3 page spread.

so it's really down to the definition of a "classic" then.

 

i think the 205 GTI is on its best way towards becoming one.

right now, a 205 still seems a bit too modern, and is not really rare yet. in addition, the many boyraced examples have done some damage to the way a 205 GTI is perceived.

 

but let's dicuss this again in five years or so, when even the younger of the then-surviving cars are in their 20ies.

i don't have any hope for standard 205s, however, because they lack the proud heritage.

Mines the 14th to last UK GTi made on an L reg (1993). That makes it coming up to 17 years old now. :P

 

So I'd say the 205 GTi is definately a classic, probably not so the 205 as a whole due to the newer non-GTi models.

What is a classic? Conundrum that's been being asked for as long as I can remember! Bit like beauty..eye of the beholder, in my view. Just because something is old doesn't make it a classic....ever looked at an Austin A30....& marvelled at the brazen cheek of BMC to even think of making something so appalling....surely even Noddy would have died of embarrassment to be seen in one.

Then as previous poster mentions...the Allegro. Adopting miserable old git mode here....many of you too young to have encountered these on the roads when they were new. Well....if you got in behind a long slow moving queue....there was usually an Allegro at the head of it. BMC, or was it BLMC then (oh, the same company, what a surprise) had a wizard idea of making an upmarket "Vanden Plas" version (one of the posters on this forum has a picture with his ID...hopefully ironic, or I'm upsetting someone), the frontal view of which deliberately & pathetically aped the then current Jaguar. But, at the time, BLMC were also making the Jaguar.....doh! My Aunt had an Allegro 1750 Sport (yes, really). I borrowed it to drive to work once...it was awful....positively dangerous going round corners!

So...age doesn't qualify a car as classic, but it's certainly a factor. Enthusiasm for, & driving enjoyment should count, so in my eyes, 205 GTi should qualify...if a bit young.....my other cars are all well over fifty years old & my CTi is my everyday car....but I still look after it!

From what I've read a classic car is something that has made a major impact in the motoring world i.e. don't forget that the 205 pretty much saved Peugeot as a manufacturer of cars. Up until the launch of the 205, their product range was dire. It is also probably the most finely balanced hot hatch in terms of performance and handling and basically was a major improvement on the Mk 1 Golf GTi (which incidentally looks its age - unlike the 205), which is widely acknowledged as being the 'grandfather' of GTis.

Have to say my main hate is MGs. That goes for pretty well all of them, even the pre-war ones, but especially the MGB. Styled on a used bar of soap and powered by a Sherpa van engine, what's not to like? In fact I refused to join the Vintage Sports Car Club as with that title I was convinced it would be populated predominantly by MG driving w*nkers. Eventually I had to join to get agreed value insurance on my car (this was in the seventies)....could hardly believe it when I got their list of eligible cars....MGs were banned!

It is acknowledged as the grandfather for a reason, it essentially (term used loosly) started the 'GTI' with which so many manufacturers later attempted to copy/tried to improve on. The 205 GTI is definately a classic hot hatch along with a handful of others.

 

Try and get hold of the January Special edition of Auto Express. Quite a good read with a special hot hatch section from the 70's to the present day.

They must be soon said to be the last classic and good gti car that peugeot have made. other than the 306 rallye and gti 6 but these i feel are too new to be made a classic. when was the last old type mini made because they are called classic cars and i think they were still be made past 1997. mines 20 yrs old that has to be a classic????

Hi,

 

shall be taking my '90 1.9 Alpine White to one of Andrew Greenwood's classic car shows in May at Cholmondley Castle, Cheshire as it is built before 1993 which is the cut off date - you see a few late '80-early '90 cars there esp their more sporting derivatives.

Often see a couple of TR7 V8s and last September an RS200 road car was there but as often with these shows a look in the carpark is rewarding

often have various one marque clubs eg Capri,TR,Escort,RSOC,Jaguar and MantaOC ther so ? good day out for us guys on here if we got a stand as I'm sure plenty of peoplw within ? hour or so of mid-Cheshire...
