Be3 Gearbox Trouble

Recommended Posts

Lewis205mi

I have just changed my drivers side drive shaft, when i drained the box i noticed that only half a litre of oil came out.

Managed to finish everything and refiled the box with 2 litres of oil no problem, reversed the car out of the garage and theres oil every where.

Ive checked the drive shaft oil seals and there fine not a drop of oil around the drive shafts, how ever i noticed that there is a 10mm hole at the front of the box with no bolt or even a thread to screw a bolt in, this is were the oil is coming from but only comes out when the car is moved.

Is this supposed to be there maybe some kind of level although the haynes manual says the filler hole is what you use for a level?

The box is fairly new probably only done 5k so im not in a hurry to blow this one up.

I don't think there should be any holes in the front of the box, not that I can remember anyway. Does the hole look like the casing is broken or is it a neat round moulded hole?

The level hole is half way up the diff casing, which I think is where the haynes tells you to fill it from, but it is much easier to fill it through the reverse cable hole (Be1) or the bung inplace of the reverse cable (be3) which is ontop of the gearbox under the battery tray.

The other possibility is that you oil is leaking out into the bell housing through the main seal, but i dont think there is that much oil in there to do so.

Sounds to me like the reverse idler bolt has fallen out?

Ive just had another mess about with it and there is actually a thread deep inside the hole i mentioned before.

Put a new bolt in and its now holding all of its oil, i just hope it hasnt done any damage driving it with only half a litre of oil in it seems to be much quiter when ticking over now.

Thanks for all of your advice

Still post a picture if you can so we can confirm if its the reverse plunger bolt.

I think they might be a special bolt in there if it is but I'm sure Miles can confirm.

Looking on the BE3 gearbox strip, its the reverse gear idler shaft securing bolt;

As said it looks like that bolt, Not the first time I;ve known them to fall out, I tend to use Thread Lock on them now.

Without the correct length bolt you can munch the box up,
