Oil Cooler Or Twin Fans?

Recommended Posts

evojay71

I'm just about to replace my old 1900 engine with another in my road rally car which has had some head and bottom end work done. I've been running twin fans on the old motor which has proved very handy and got me out the s**t when the fan switch broke last year on an event. The new engine has a sandwich plate for an oil cooler,so do I keep the twin fans or ditch the one fan and fit an oil cooler in it's place?? I've ordered some water wetter which from what I've been told keeps an engine a lot cooler when using it in competition. I guess this could be a swings n roudabouts question?? Thanks in advance.

Why not keep the twin fans and fit an oil cooler somewhere else?

I'd rewire the fans and make sure they work properly, when working as they should on a good rad they're perfectly sufficient, and I would use an oil cooler on a car used for rallying.

Cover the oil cooler in the winter though (when you're not competing that is) as the oil does sit really cold on them as it flows through the cooler all the time, the oil being too cold can do as much harm as being too hot.

One fan is standard set up and the other is wired on a switch inside the car as a back up

have ran a 205 in road rallying for 5 years and never seen the need for 2 fans and never had it wired on a switch, Would much rather a oil cooler over having two fans.

I run a 16 row oil cooler, also on the new car im building i have a 72c thermostat for it, had it from skip browns but it came in a motoquip box which thay had taped the number up on, have binned the 205 rad cowling and made my own bracket and used a kenlow fan aswell.

Twin fans won't make the car run any cooler, they simply bring the coolant back down to a low enough level to turn them off quicker but with minimum cooling to the oil.

I'd fit a proper oil cooler (not the standard little thing), with a properly working single fan & decent rad, my cars cooling system manages trackdays in summer (albeit a UK summer) perfectly well & thats with an ooil / water heat exchanger which keeps the temps closer but the water hotter.

Graham.
