Gear Change

Recommended Posts

Paul Smith

Hi

Any suggestions on the gear change. When changing gear it feels a bit lumpy through the gears, and it is quite difficult in to 2nd (drivable but odd). Is it possible gear linkage?

Thanks

Paul

Worth replacing your gearbox oil as this is often overlooked just under 2l of 75w/80. Gear linkages wear out, they can be bought relatively cheaply from Pug or there are altenatives available. Also worth checking the 13mm nut is tight that holds the ball on the subframe as this often comes loose.

Cool, I'll try the nut first and give the oil a change and see where she sits. Then try the gear linkage or is it worth just doing all of them in one hit?

Also maybe worth adjusting the clutch slightly if its notchy trying to get into gear.

The likelyhood is the linkages will be buggered, so its worth doing those along with gear oil and checking the ball on the subframe, can even fit a quickshift if you want a shorter throw. The gearbox drain plug is pretty obvious, poke your head underneath. To fill it up remove the nr side wheel and you'll see a 19mm bolt on the side of the box, or you can put it in from the top, by removing the reverse cable if you have one or the plastic nut if you have the later be3.

As said change the oil First, Either 75/80 or 75/90 is what I use now without any problems, You'll be surprized what types of oil you see in these and it can damage the box in extreme cases.

Linkages can be a cause but you normally get a vague feeling if they go, Along with the Bush in the Quadrant Arm or 'L' linkage on the subframe.

The box's tend to be a little clunky when cold when they get worn but most are 20 years old now so you've got to expect a little wear and tear
