Hi i have a 1.6gti we're not sure what engine it definatly has init its either a 1.6 or a 1.9 as my mate replaced the engine with one out of a 1.9gti track day car but he still seemed to think it was a 1.6, but im not certain. Basically it has air fuel and spark but it will not start, ive checked for imboliser's and alarms and theres nothing of the sort, i've also replaced the coil, dizzy cap nd rota arm, and retimmed it twice, but still no luck, any ideas?

do a search this has been coverd quite alot recently even with the same syptoms as yours

 

compression might be down

fuel pressure .have you checked it is the pump working

plugs could be fouled

 

does it backfire at all

Double check all your wiring connections - particularly the blue ecu temp sensor under the dizzy. there are 2 plugs here, blue and black. Not uncommon to plug these in wrong with an engine change, blue plug to blue sensor, black plug to black sensor.Also check on all the multi-wired plastic connections that the individual wires are each pushed fully home and have not pushed through the back of the plastic casing. It's even been known to fit the AFM the wrong way around and starve the engine of air!

Thats sounds bit like my car but when mine is warm starts fine but leave it over night it want start in the morning untill u put bit of easy start down the intake fired up nicely.

Cheers guys gonna have a good check over the possible problems listed here tomorrow see if i can really find out whats going on with it, it does backfire occansionally and i know the fuel pump is working cz after tryin to start if for a while it'l flood its self
