Tapping Sound Behind Cam Pully ?!?

Recommended Posts

carlh.1

Ive just got my engine started and have a slight tapping sound behind the crank pully, im hoping its just a bit of plastic and not internal tapping. can the pully be removed and the engine started without it on or will it cause damage? It will only be for a second to see if the tappings gone? Any help would be much appriciated. crank pully sorry not cam pully! my heads fried after the troubles with this car!

I wouldn't recommend trying to start the engine with the pulley off.

has the engine ever been apart before? only thing I can think of is if the timing belt is loose, or the oil pump spacer has been left out and the chain is loose.

My 106 gti developed a tapping/slapping noise from that area, the next day it bent all 16 valves :)

It turned out that the woodruff key in the crank had broken up. Id check it out if I was you.

Deffo don't start it with pulley off, your oil pump drive won't turn,so no oil will be pumped round engine :)

Will deffo tap then :)

Sorted it, the 13mm bolts that hold the plastic cam belt cover were catching the pully, ground them down a tad, replaced pully, and the tapping had gone. big sigh of relive! glad it wasnt internal...........

Next problem........ Wheres the best place to get a rebuil kit for a tb25 turbo it came of a 406 sri?
