Locating An Air Leak

Recommended Posts

Quarryman

I'm pretty sure i have an air leak somewhere.

Engine idles at 2k when cold and eventually drops to 1.5k when warm. Throttle screw is completely closed (otherwise it goes up to 2.5k).

So its getting air from somewhere else. Any easy way to locate it?

Theres only a limited amount of places it could be coming from really, missing oil filler bolt on the inlet is a common one, i'd be tempted to remove all the induction pipes before the afm and check no hoses have popped off or are damaged, then put them back ensuring all pipes are pushed on properly and jubilee clips are nice and tight. Spraying wd40 around the areas can often show up air leaks, although tend not to do this myself.

Also worth checking the throttle is closing fully and the TPS is working correctly.

Actually i read somewhere else that if i block the entrance to the AFM and the engine doesn't stall there is a leak past that point, so i might try that.

Is spraying WD40 on the hoses a bad idea?

Also, whereabouts do i locate the TPS? (throttle position sensor?)

Have a read through that, TPS is located rad side of the throttle body, should hear it click when moving the throttle. Check the main site as there are some articles that will help explain everything, and give the relevant tests to determine if everything is working correctly.

cheers, James

thanks james. I'm looking through the articles on the PDF now.

As someone said to me once: "205 GTis didn't even idle correctly out of the factory"

:D

If you spray easy start systematically on each hose if the revs rise then you have a leak. Not sure why it would be a bad idea?
