Annoying Hot Running Problem

Recommended Posts

Ok so i have done loads of searching and tinkering with my 1.9 to try and sort out the old rough idle stalling problem so common on these.

Heres where i am so far and am really after some advice as im a little stumped.

Engine is totally standard. I have replaced ECU temp sensor, i have taken all inlet piesp etc off and cleaned double checked for leaks etc, i have taken the idle screw out totally and gave it a good clean in carb cleaner.

After all of the above the problem had changed a little but was ultimately still pants, the idle was a little more steady, but varied from day to day, i have checked throttle cable / butterfly and it seems ok, not perfect, but not too bad.

The car has always ran rich and smell of fuel quite badly when getting out of the car, so i thought mixture has probably been messed with in an attempt to sort out the problem in the past. I am pretty sure my SAD is knckered too as when i squeeze the relative pipe she cough's and pretty much dies. The vaccuum advance is also not working and i am looking for one at the moment, cant find one anywhere other than bosch delears saying they need to order from germany and charge me 50 quid, any pointers?

I then bought a second hand AFM (retracked so beleived to be good). With this fitted and the engine warm it seemed to be working well, with a nice smooth drop in revs on over run. The problem was that it seemed to be running very hot compared to my old AFM, now i am totally confused and think that it could be a fuelling / timing problem? I have swapped back now as i was worried it was running lean and would melt something if i carried on running it like it.

My question is does this make sense (fundementaly), i reckon the old AFM was set very rich in order to help it idle and timing advanced with it, and now the new AFM has correct air fuel setting but running way to advanced? Would this gives symptoms of running lean, i.e. hot? Im not a pro with pinging / knocking but with the new AFM it did misfire alot more is this pinging?

Sorry about the long post on a never endin topic but im scratching my head and its doing my head in so bad having to heel and toe in traffic!!! :P

P.S another point is that very occasionally when it stalls it is very hard to start and takes 30seconds or so, i thought this was maybe the richness of the mixture flooding the engine?

Knock some advance off the dizzy and see if it helps.

If the car starts to die when you squeeze the SAD pipes when its cold then it shows its working, if you can kill the car when its hot by doing this the SAD is stuck open.

Can you get access or pay someone to put it on a gas analyser to setup your old AFM, or even check your new one.

Is it possible you have cooling issues?

First of all new Vacuum advance units can be bought from Pug for about £20.

If it was me I would be putting on the new AFM and take it to be setup at a garage somewhere (adjusting the timing on the dizzy/idle too). Any MOT place should be able to do it. It can't be any worse can it?

As you rightly say, it sounds like your AFM is running rich, like mine. When I put the gas analyser on, no matter how much I tweeked the CO screw I could not get it within limits, hence purchasing a 2nd hand AFM and giving that a try.

I'm sure other people will offer some more in depth help.

Lee.

Im pretty sure i dont have cooling issues, mainly based on the fact it runs at perfect temp with the 'rich' AFM, and with the 'thought to be correct' AFM as soon as it gets to hot the fan kicks in and stops it getting any hotter, i just know its getting to hot too quickly in the first place!

Cheers for the heads up on Vacuum advance unit, i guess i should of checked there first...

I think i will put the new AFM back on and retard the timing a little and see if it helps, just to confirm, anti clockwise would be retarding it right?

cheers
