Mocal Thermostatic Sandwidge Plate

Recommended Posts

swordfish210

Hi, while my 205 was briefly on the road (after the engine rebuild but before the electrics all died) the oil temperature gauge was giving some odd readings. I have a thermo plate on it which (when i first fitted it) worked perfectly and it opened at 82C and you could feel the warm oil flowing in to the cooler. After i rebuilt the engine though and repositioned the cooler it now seems to be open all the time and, even after a long enthusiastic drive, i could barely get it above 70C and the cooler was nice and warm.

Thats the only pic of the plate that i have (it's a bit neater looking now as i lined up the pipes :) ) I know of one other person that has had this problem but i was wondering of anyone else has encountered and overcome it. Suppose it serves me right for buying Mocal stuff

You'll need to drop it off and have a look.

I rang one on my SBD'd engine cav and it worked fine.

Take it out - make sure there's no carp in it sticking the valve open, and then boil in a pan and test.

My friend bought one of these kit a short while ago, I couldn't see the thermostat...

Do all of the sandwhich plates come with them, or do you have to buy it?

I cleaned it and gave it a visual check when it was off the engine and it seemed fine.

No you can't see the thermostat, only specific ones have a thermostat and they're more expensive...for nothing it would seem :)

Pretty sure the large nut (22mm ish) on the right side of the picture is where the stat is, non stat plate does not have this.

Correct - the large nut on the side is the end of the thermostat itself. And most sandwhich plates come without a stat, which is not really a good idea as overcooled oil (under optimum oil operating tempratue) is not really what you want.

Hence if you have the extra £30 you should by a stat'ed one as it'll get your oil temp up quicker and keep it where it should be.

And you can see the stat if you look in by that nut.

I would take the plate out and boil test it, as if it is sticking open, it could stick shut!

If you got it from ThinkAutomotive they are pretty good at taking things back if they've failed before the really should.

Have read complaints about these before, apparently the in line thermostats are much better at regulating the flow to cooler :P
