I have just brought a VTS engine out of a 2003 Xsara it has come with the gearbox and drive shafts. Obviously the drive shafts are the wrong lenght, but is it worth messing about and making up a pair of drive shafts out of the VTS and 205 ones or should I just put my BE1 back in out of my 1900?

Is the VTS box strongher or is it not worth the hassel?

Also does any body know what clutch I should need for if I was to fit the BE1 gearbox to the VTS/GTI6 engine?

I also plan to fit a limited slip diff in the future so which gearbox is best suited to a slip diff (cost)

I have done a search but I could not find this exact information.

Thanks

Neil

MI or BX16v clutch if your using Be1 gearbox :D

VTS gearbox will give you better ratios for motorway/dual carriageway cruising, depends what you use car for ;)

PS,you realise ECU/wiring loom are no good for conversion from that 2003 Xsara???? :)

No I did not realise about the ecu and wiring. I do have the igniton switch and imoberliser bits. Am I in for a lot of problems?

Box wise unless you use a Highbread of BE1 and BE3 It's a pain, I would as you need one anyway buy a new Cross Shaft/clutch arm from a std BE3 gearbox for a 205 etc and then either use your BE1 if the holes are there for the arm or just swap it over on the late BE3 box as the arm on that is a pull type.

Yes the wiring on the late Xsara's is you have the 3 plug ECU is a mare, Not sure if anyone's done it, You might need a exhaust manifold as well due to the late ones having a odd fitment on the join

IIRC its called a Multiplex loom on 2001 onwards Xsaras, you will need an earlier Gti6/VTS loom and unlocked ECU.

As Miles says above,I couldn't find anyone thats done it,they all go to earlier pre-multiplex loom/ECU :)

Fed up now :D looking for loom and unlocked ecu.

I think I am going to go down the BE1 box and standard drive shafts.

Is the vts 5 speed box clutch the same as the MI16?

I am going to look at the manifold now and check.

Thanks

Miles do you have any looms and ecus?

No,same size clutch but different types of actuation,so bearings are different. :P

Ones a pull type, the others a push type.

My xsara engine was from an 03 car with multiplex loom, the engine went staight in using the xsara's clutch and box with 205 1.6 shafts and original 205 clutch cable.

I bought a 306 for the loom, ecu and exhaust manifold.

Thanks for that Dave.

Did all the sensors on the engine work and connect ok with the GTI6 loom?

The only one that I had to change was the sensor ontop of the inlet manifold, the plug is different :)
