King Lead Compatability

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have put another engine into my 1989 1.9 gti. The new engine is 1992 so is the newer phase and I think I am right in saying they normally have the coil mounted on the inlet manifold whereas mine is mounted on the inner wing.

Question is, can you just pull the king lead off the distributor cap and replace it with one from an earlier 205 so that it matches the connection on the coilpack? As the other 4 wires on the coilpack have the same fitting but the one for the king lead is different. And if this is acceptable to do, does anyone know where I can just get the single king lead as I can only find the full kit including the distrubutor cap and spark plug leads.

cheers

Rich

For this I usually use the old type cylindrical coil, the newer screw on dizzy cap/dizzy and leads. King lead is then the newer type with the clip on copper ring at the coil end cut back to just the retaining ring and crimped to fit into the coil. Works great for me and has the advantage of being a complete set of leads and retains the original loom without having to splice in the new type coil plug.

So I cut the rubber back on the connection then squash the fitting slightly so it fits in?
