How To Tell A 1.6 Engine From A 1.9 ?

Recommended Posts

Guest liddle145

Hi

Just Bought a lovely 1.9 phase 1 GTI in very standard form, Havnt owned or been round GTI's for over 17 years or so I am a little out of touch and have a few questions.

I was wondering if theres any way to tell the difference between a 1.6 motor and a 1.9 other than engine numbers ?

just want to make sure that the car is as it should be (all looks OK numbers match etc but these cars were messed around with a fair bit back in my day).

engine number

DB6 CW44029761

Thanks in advance Mick

The 1.9 should have a spacer block of about an inch thickness between the bottom of the engine block and the sump, the 1.6 doesn't have this.

The guys will soon identify it from your engine number though I'd imagine.

1.9 will have a sandwhich plate for the oil cooler, which should be located in one of the fan holes.

Another give away is 1.9 discs on back, 1.6 drums on back. Edit- Not too sure on this for phase 1's

"D6B" is a 1.9 8v non-CAT GTi (XU9JA) engine block.

Should also have yellow fuel injectors, a spacer plate on the sump (and a thinner sump), and an air-oil cooler.

Of course, the only way to be sure us to measure the stroke - 88mm would make it a 1.9 (bore is 83mm on both 1.6 and 1.9)

as ant says, fuel injector colours are the easiest to check.

Also 1.9 has an oil cooler, you can see the sandwich plate and hoses under the oil filter.

Gentry engined 1.9's don't have the sump strengthening plate. These are the 105 bhp ones and tend to be automatic in GTI form. However these are only late cars and not that common

Does that mean these engines use a taler sump?

Yes, they use a 1.6 style tin sump
