Question On Vts Box On To Xu10j4rs Lump

Recommended Posts

rubyna

Just a few things i wanted to know as im fitting a Vts box onto my 205 gti5. I originally had the standard 1.9 box with reverse next to 4th gear,

i know i need to change the clutch arm over but will the mi16 clutch be o.k. with it as it has only done about 750-1000 miles? Plus is there

anything else needed to use the Vts box? i know theyre fitted together on the Xsara anyway so mating isnt a problem I just want to make

sure that i aint missing somthing??

Thanks, Luke..

Depends on what clutch arm/fork setup you're running

If you're using the standard VTS box pull-type clutch arm, you'll need a matching pull-type clutch (ie GTi-6)

If you're swapping to a 205 style push-type clutch arm as it sounds like you are, then your existing Mi16 clutch is bang on the money.

You'll need to swap the gear selector arm over on the VTS box to a 205 style one, and swap the speedo drive setup over.

You'll need to change your clutch arm and fork (for gti item) as Anthony says to run the push type Mi clutch. (Don't forget release bearing)

This is the same setup I have at the minute

Also watch out when you change the selector arm, you can lose some gears (I've lost 5th and reverse before).

It's not the end of the world if you do, you can do a bit of jiggedy pokety with the selector arm to slot it back in place.

You DON'T have to take the diff cover off to slot it back in, even though it makes it 10 times easier.

Also take the extra bracket off for the Xsara linkages it's not needed.

Cheers for the swift reply Ant, that was pretty much what i thought just beter to check 1st, when you say the speedo

setup do you mean the VSS with the cable drive and the dual output?

Luke..

So the VTS selector arm will not fit the 205 conversion ? I have an engine/box/pipes set up for the 205 conversion which came from the 1999

Xsara VTS and im not sure if the arm on the VTS gearbox is the 205 or VTS one. Is there any noticeable differences to the two arms ?

EDIT> It has the standard clutch.

Cheers

As standard, the VTS speedo drive is electronic only, so there's nothing to plug the mechanical 205 speedo into.

Ideally you need one of the dual mechanical/electronic speedo drive (VSS) as the GTi-6 management isn't quite right if it doesn't see a speed signal, but if you haven't got one, you can just use the old 205 mechanical only speedo drive - atleast that way, you'll have a working speedo.

I have the one with the cable and dual plug off the s16 i think it was. Dan fitted it originally on the 6 conversion

and the speedo worked fine so is it just swap that over?

That's exactly what you need - swap it over (together with both cogs ideally) and it'll be spot on

And the plastic drive cog's from the 1.9 box

The two speedo cogs - one on the bottom of the VSS, and the one that turns that which is on the side of the diff.

Do the standard 1.9 205 shafts fit the VTS box? Ive got one to fit to my 1.9 mi16?

Cheers Steve

Nope, either got to swap the diff over or use the inner cv cup off the Xsara/306 shafts.

The 205/309 nearside shaft will poke out a bit when using a VTS box due to slightly different diff internals. This can cause the shaft to weep oil through not sealing properly. However it seems hit and miss, some people have problems and others dont. Ive done 3 cars (mine included) with VTS boxes that have been fine using the standard 205 shafts and new OE seals. Try it and see, it will leak pretty much as soon as you fill it up with oil if it doesnt work.

The other option is using the matching inner CV cup for a later style box, which will fit snugly in the VTS box.

Thanks for that.

I also read that the VTS diff is a strong one ?

Apparently its stronger yes, not that ive ever really had the pleasure of breaking one. Maxi hasnt broken his one with 240hp and 888s yet though so they seem a bit stronger than a standard 205 one! Hes also using standard 309 shafts with no troubles or leaking come to think of it.

Not really, Just hearsay mainly, The sun & planet gears are basically the same, The diff case is stronger thou but that rarely give's any problems

The shaft thing does seem very hit and miss as has previoulsy been posted. I personally have never had any trouble with my one I converted last year, although that is not to say your one wont give you trouble.

The casing is a lot stronger on the VTS box and it also has extra bell housing bolts which can obviously be used if you are running the XU10J4RS lump. Mine seems to be comping with 241BHP and flat changes without any hassle....(runs off to touch some wood....)

I had to change the inner cup on mine as it was leaking, but it very easy job to do.
