Head Trouble

Hello, been dreading writing this post as i know im going to be called all sorts of names

basically i was doing the cambelt on my gti 1.9 all went fine ran up as haynes manual said let it warm up then went to re adjust, did that then started it up again this time forgetting to put key and drive pulley on (was in a rush as was getting dark) shortly after heard belt slip and engine came to a abrupt halt basically the crank gear sliped on the shaft. as a plant mechanic by trade (hangs head in shame) ive already had a good ribbing from family freinds and work colleuges so go steady gents although in my defence we dont do a great deal of engine work in this throw away Society :D .

anyway to my question..

had the head off today all the vaules are bent, pistons look ok 2 have slight marks were vaules hit them however you can not feel any groves etc they are just visual,

what would be best to do as money is abit tight, replace my vaules in head, clean pistons off with little wet and dry or

source a second hand head have it skim etc, were is the head likey to have cracked if it has?

any ideas suggestions or tips much appreciated

many thanks

steve

Bugger.

I guess take it on the chin and take the opportunity to have the head refurbed, new valves, new guides if required, seats re cut, new stem seals. At least then if you are planning to keep the car you know you won't be going back to it for a few years to come.

if it stopped at idle, you're probably going to be ok with valves and guides. However with engines floating about for less than 100 quid, it would probably be more economical to swap the whole lump. Seeing as you have the head off, a second hand xu10 head would be best, they flow a bit better and are fairly plentiful.

thanks for all advice guys,

ive found a head with vavles but its a long way away but maybe able to meet saturday,

really short of time me and the car currently at parents in kent and need to be back home in brighton lol.

xu10 head would be nice but would settle for the norm.

dont suppose anyones got a refurbed one lying around in the kent area lol? i can get the parts from eurocar parts but having right problem navigating there website there seems to be 2 different types of vavle for me reg and it dose not give me dimensions or anything,

cheer steve

Sorry to hear that, but we've all made silly mistakes before. If it were me i'd try and source a known good head and fit that rather than rebuild the existing one.

I would get the original refurbed and fit that, if you bought a 2nd hand one you wont know what its like unless its been already refurbed. As been said get the valves replaced and guides checked, new valve stem seals and shims reset and bobs your uncle maybe even light skim seeing as its off.

I think I'd be weary about getting just a second hand head, unless you get it from a reputable source and know the history, as there's got to be some reason why it's been taken off the engine and sold separately. I think your best bet is to get a whole engine, especially if money is tight. A new set of valves is going to cost you about £150 and for that money you could get a complete 8V engine in good nick, then either stick the whole thing in or swap the heads over.
