A Lot Of Mayo In The Oil Filler

Recommended Posts

davey205

i know its common to get a bit of mayo in the oil filler on 205's but went to topup today and there is a LOT, so much that the oil barely went down into the engine at all when i 1st poured some in. should i be worried?

I get mayo often as I only do short journeys. I usually change the oil every couple if months and clean out the breather pipes. If I use the car for long journeys, which down here would be twenty minutes I only get a trace. As long as you haven't got any in your water I wouldn't worry. I always get more mayo in the winter due to it being colder.

Hopefully you haven't poured so much oil into the engine or you'll ruin the engine as it is trying to pump so much oil around without much space.

I know that I haven't had my 205 for long, but after working on so many and owning old classic Posrche's I have seen a similar problem before.

If I was you this what I would do:

If you don't do more than 15 miles a day in your car, take the car out for a sixty mile sprint (Not to fast, it will warm the engine up thoroughly) this will clear out any condesation in the oil filler cap, do this at least once a week. This is common on all cars from the 1980's.

Check the dipstick for any mayo looking oil. Hopefully there shouldn't be any. It should be black or syrup looking colour after an oil change.

Check your coolant expansion tank. Hopefully you shouldn't be losing any coolant. Again check the colour and the cap for any mayo.

Clean out the oil filler cap, take out the mesh, and the body of the oil filler cap and the appropriate pipes. Clean thoroughly ( x2 250ml cans do the trick) with carburettor cleaner. You'll be suprised.

Put your hand near the end of the exhaust. you'll get white smoke in the winter as it is cold, check your palm of your hand. hopefully it will be wet with condesation. If there is a lot of soot coming from the exhaust, your valves will need looking at.

Don't worry as it is only something simple from above.

Good luck.

Sean

No not much at all just topped up slightly maybe half a cup as it was a bit down on the dipstick.

Thats not too bad, when was the last time you put some oil in and how many miles do you do since the last time you put some oil in?

Thats pretty good only to use only that much oil. Sounds like the engine is using the right quantity.

Perhaps if I was you clean the oil filler cap and the relevant parts with carb cleaner.

How many miles do you do a day?

about 25 miles every other day and my extremely short journey to work, will it hurt to have a drop or 2 of carb cleaner in the oil because the mayo goes right down the filler neck and i was thinking of using a toothbrush........

Take off the breathers and clean them off the car. They are only jubilee clipped in place. Also allows you to check the condition of them.

That kinda mileage could be the reason why you're getting so much mayo.

If I was you take the car out for a sixty mile run once a week. As it is a larger engine than say a 1.1 or 1.3 it will need a good run. Engines larger than 1.1 or 1.3 need to be run.

Replace the oil filler cap only as the rubber seal could be perishing or getting old with age, if the oil filler cap is not a secure tight fit condesation will get into the oil filler tube and cap and start producing mayo. This happen once on my Porsche 944. I replaced the oil filler cap. Problem solved.

There is bound to be good roads near Hastings for a good run. Let the engine sing like it should on a 205Gti :D

did a 60m round trip , went quite well no hesitantcy or flat spots & pulled smoothly, oil pressure is very good (when booted goes up to just past 3/4 ) but was wet so difficult to really open her up that much, will check filler tomorrow and water and dipstick for dreaded mayo. I'm hoping the excessive amount ive been getting is just due to the cold, how i normally drive and the type of runs.

As far as I know. (I could be wrong) the brillo thing in the oil filler cap acts as an breather for the oil. If I was you take it out and thoroughly clean it with carb cleaner.

Good to hear that there is no mayo.

Take the wire mesh out and leave it out (best place for it - the bin) It just seems to collect all the oil and then gunge up and block the breather system.

There is another one in the wall of the filler neck housing but it much more difficult to remove as the plastic is usually brittle and breaks. If you plan on removing this one remove the filler neck so that if it does break the bits don't end up in the sump.
