Dropping The Engine From An Xs

Recommended Posts

Wrighty_1988

Hey, ive come to a point in my XS to mi16 project where ive got to get the engine out. I dont really want to have to get an engine crane and all that gubbins. Is there a way where i could get the engine out without using one. Bear in mind all of the subframe and everything will be comming off also as i need to change it all for GTi spec. Would i be able to just undo all of the subframe bolts and some engine mounting bolts and then lift the car up over it?

Thanks alot guys

Hi. yes you can drop the engine and subframe and lift the car over the top. its quite a common way of doing it.

would recommend taking the struts off first though as otherwise they just get in the way.

I also did it this way using an engine crane and a 4 post ramp  . The engine went down and the car went up!

Think ill have a go at doing it the probably harder but cheaper way lol. Ill stack wood up under the subframe to hold it then lift the car up. With the car being totally stripped and all the front end off of it i dont think it will be too heavy, then i will knock the engine out of the way :o. Can only try lol.

I dropped the engine out of mine once with 2 trolly jacks and the car on 2 axle stands. The car stayed where it was and i just slowly lowered the engine down and pulled it from underneath the car.

Sounds like what i will be doing to my car, might get a length of wood across the top strapped to the engine and have a few people steadying it whilst i jack it down. Am upto the stage where all i have left to do is disconnect the drive shafts, to which im gonna take all suspension off. Undid the wheel bolts to find the wheel bolts were holding the discs on lol, the previous owner has sheared the holding bolts off lol

I have started thinking about what go going to do when it comes to changing to gti spec subframe etc and want other peoples opinions. I was thinking that i could search around and find a person breaking a 1.9 gti and buy everything off of the subframe and all things attached except the struts and then tidy them all up by derusting and protecting with either spray paint or hammerite, my question is, is what would be the items you wouldnt tart up and it would be best to change them. Because there cars arent young anymore and some stuff will be on its way out. Im not afraid to spend a bit of money to replace lifed parts. Guess ill have to get looking for a 1.9 being split :-P.

Depends on how much you want to spend and how quick you want to do everything. Ideally just keep the subframe and get hold of a pair of new wishbones to save the hassle of replacing individual bushes and ball joints, obviously new struts etc, ARB bushes and if you're in there replacing the ARB will complete the set, giving a factory fresh front end.

As for painting, have a look for a wire brush attachment for an angle grinder, it'll save a shed load of time, cleaning up the subframe. Then treat any rusty spots with something like Kurust or jenolite. A lot of lads seem to be using POR15 or similar for painting, hammerite has a nasty habit of chipping from road grit / debris at high speed, where as POR15 is pretty bulletproof regarding chips.
