Engine Management Light Is On...

Recommended Posts

Did a search but cant seem to find the answer im looking for, so if there is alreadly a thread on this i apoligise...

The engine management light is intermittly on and off for approx 30secs at a time on my L-reg 1.9 8v gti. How do i diagnose whats the problem?

Is there a code reader or summit i need to buy? If so where does it plug in? I assume its the plug below the steering wheel on the right hand side but it looks damaged ;) Any other plugs in the engine bay? Or can i work it out using a multimeter?

John

sounds like you have a Motronic + cat equipped car?

edit, this is what autodata says -

Draper do a cheap box of tricks that'll do the above if you don't fancy cracking out the soldering iron after a trip to Maplin or similar.

you plug it into the 2 pin diagnostic connector as it says, then extract the codes as described.

I assume that the managment light has to be on from when the ignition is turned on for this to work?

Mine only comes on after couple of mins or so when the car is warming up

yes, and it will come on and stay on till you start the engine.

yes, that's because you started the engine, which if you follow the directions I posted to the letter, you wouldn't have done
