205 Turbo - From Citroen Xm, What Gear Box?

Recommended Posts

stuart1298

Right i'm trying to source the parts i need to do this conversion, i have the gti6/mi16 fly wheel, i have a 1.6 gti, so i was gonna use that gear box, but would i be better with a gti6 gear box, i had a 306 gti6 and loved the gear range on it, if i was to get a gti6 box, what drive shafts would i use, and what hubs??

Ive a 1.9 box on mine, 1.6 box probably be a bit too brutal on accelleration.

If you need any turbo bits I might be breaking mine soon just ask. ECU/Loom etc.

1.6 box will be pointless, you need longer ratios to make use of the broad torque range, i'd say a 1.9 box at least.

306 gti6 box is a bit of work if it's a BE3 box you have already.

A few people say they loose lock aswell.

You do lose quite a lot of lock with a 6 speed box in a 205 as its physically longer. I find the lack of lock annoying enough in a 306, so would never fit one to a 205. It is possible though. I also find the 6 speed box annoying in the 306 GTI6 due to having to swap gears all the time as they are so close together, a turbo engine with its extra torque doesn't really need closely packed ratios between gears.

Lots of people say a 1600 box is useless with a turbo, I wonder how many have tried one for themselves? I have one in my 205 turbo and it clears off up the road like its underpants are on fire. I guess it depends what you want the car for, I use mine for general blasting about duties when I'm bored of my diesel Audi, so the short gearbox suits me fine. If I want a relaxed cruise somewhere I don't use the 205 anyway. I have got a Xsara VTS box for my car, but I do like the acceleration of the shorter box, so haven't got motivated enough to swap it over yet, whether I will get round to it I can't say, I can't see it happening just yet anyway.

This is on a 1600 turbo with roughly 195bhp and 205ftlb.

Do you have a limited slip diff though? My car has a plate diff in it, I'm certain that without this it would be pretty useless.

arrrr said the pirate, I guess that would be it. I only have to jab the throttle at low speed and the wheels light up.

I found my almost 1600 gearbox annoying in my CTI. The worst part was being on boost at a 70 mph cruising speed made it just kangaroo and horrible to drive, however it did go quick but when wheelspinning in the wet in 5th, the novelty wears of a bit. A diff is the answer but a longer box is cheaper. I have an Mi16 with 1.9 final drive so it is really long up top but like a 1.9 on 1st to 3rd

I'm building a spec box for the car at the moment.

It will use the gears of the Mi box and the final drive from a 1.9 box.

With this spec I still have got the first and second gear of the 1.9(so revy), a little longer third and a longer fourth and fifth.

At 3000 rpm the new box will be faster about 15km/h in fifth gear.

This is the first project. I will test it, and start building a box with Mi gears and the final drive of a 1.8 Diesel. This box will be longer thant the first, but maybe it would be too long, I don't know but will try it later.

And if you want a very long fifth for Your motorway journey, You still have got the opportunity to use the 5. gear of a 405 1.9 GR. I have got this on my current Mi box. It's great but in the city I must rev the fourth a bit higher to get a normal rpm in fifth gear.
