205 Gti 1.9 - Intermittent Starting Problem

Hi all,

 

I have a 1987 (Phase 1) GTI 1.9 which is completely standard and has a Bosch distributer and LE2 Jetronic injection. It has new plugs, rotor arm and distributor cap and recent ht leads. Normally it starts first time and runs beautifully... no missing etc.

 

My problem is that, sometimes, the car just won't start (turns over but doesn't fire) or starts but runs really rough for the first 10 mins. If I go back to it the next day, or a few hours later, it may well start first time or run perfectly! So it's an intermittent problem... always the hardest to solve.

 

I have checked that I am getting fuel at the fuel rail when she's turning over, so I know it's not a fuel delivery problem. So I figure it's an ignition circuitry problem.

 

Can any of you suggest the items that I should check, as I don't know much about the ignition system on this car.

When you say Ht lead (singular) do you mean just the one from coil to dizzy or the whole set? Thanks!
