Gear Problems

Recommended Posts

I am having problems changing gear in my car! is an '86 phase 1 with a BE1 gearbox.

very occasionally it shifts without feeling munchy but most of the time it seems to have real problems!

It wont go into reverse without turning off the engine to do so, and all the gears from 1st to 5th are hard to engage, particularly 1,2 and 3 but 4 and 5 still crunch.

also the biting point on my clutch seems to be on the floor. i think the clutch isn't disengaging properly, for example with the clutch down in 1st if i take my foot off the brake the car starts to roll, as it does in reverse also. and if i put the car in reverse before i turn on the engine it almost shunts when i turn the key!

i have taken the car to just gti's and the guy there tightened some bolts, particularly the ball joint one that i have read about on here, and also tightened the bolt on the end of the clutch cable as there was a fair bit of slack.

after taking the car there it still seems to have the same problems though. can anybody help me out, diagnosis or recommend me somewhere close by i can take the car to get it sorted?

cheers, jake

Sounds like it needs the clutch adjusting. Also make sure all the engine to gearbox bolts are in and tight.

Id do as tom said, and also check the Clutch Arm Pivot hasn't bent. If your not mechincally minded id find a better garage than just gti's.

As said I would make sure you have some endfloat still on the clutch cable as allot of Garage's just do them up, Around 2 to 3mm is fine,

Check the Clutch arm as Ed's said isn;t broken and the bush's are OK on it as I doubt they have ever been touched and You have the right length pin (Spacer) in there

also check all your gearbox bolts are present and correctly tightened, as this may have the same effect (caught me out twice after changing the clutch)

my clutch completely died on me yesterday so i gotta get a new one now anyway

where can i get one from, i got a be1 gearbox, all the clutches i find are for cars from '87 onwards which is no good to me!

the car is at a garage so they will hopefully be able to fix it for me, at a cost, i will get them to check all bolts and bushes etc while they are sorting it.

cheers for the help!!

GSF have them in stock, Make sure it's either a Valeo or LUK, Don;t accept anything else.

I would get some new bushes for the quadrant arm on the box, But I doubt the Garage will have a clue about this (99% don't), New D/S seals and that the right bolts are put back, another issue

Heres another point aswell, I'm not sure if Miles can remember me contacting him about my BE3 G/Box crunching after having it repaired but I tracked down the problem and cured it "Make sure you put "BV Total Oil"" in I paid £14 from the local dealers mainly b'cos i was passing and now mines as sweet as a nut

after my car being in the garage all weekend i got it back, apparently the pin had fallen out, but the clutch needed adjusting too and hadn't gone!

after driving it to chichester and back (about 15 miles each way) the clutch has gone back to where it was and isn't disengaging again

this is starting to become quite expensive i feel, is there anywhere apart from just gti's down south that anyone would recommend i take it? or any more advise you can give me?

i would try working on it myself but i am no mechanic and wouldn't want to make it worse!

cheers
