Cambelt On A 1.9 Gti

i know its been posted 1000s of times but im gona attempt to change my timing belt tomorow are there any tips to give me before i start ive looked in the haynes manual to see how its done but is there any snags that could pop up along the way or is it straight forward

Haynes gives quite a good overview in my opinion, so if you follow that you won't go too far wrong.

 

Only thing that can occasionally be difficult is getting the crank pulley off, as they can get pretty stuck in place if they've not been off in a while - a hub puller works perfectly for pulling them off if it's being stuborn. Otherwise, it's all pretty straight forward and the spring tensioner setup is very easy.

thanks for the reply i have been on about changing it for 3yrs now so i will give it a go,how much is a cam belt and water pump these days?

Ring up your local dealer and find out, alternatively you could try using Servicebox.

its ok ive got a rought guide on the prices off ebay,they seem farely cheap,so the motor factors should be roughly the same

GSF lists the cambelt and waterpump at £8.50 and £20.90 (ex VAT) respectively.

 

Both are common parts shared with most 1.6 and 1.9 8v engines in the Peugeot and Citroen range, so most motorfactors should stock the bits and be quite reasonable price-wise.

finaly got a water pump and cambelt yesterday any way we got the old belt and waterpump off but the new water pump is different the fins at the back are bigger than the one i have taken off and when we fit it it catches,the man at the motorfactors said it only lists 1 but its to big so there must be 2,any ideas
