Cambelt Change, Its An Xu Diesel!

Recommended Posts

pugpaul

My 1996 306 non-turbo'd diesel is a 1905cc XU lump.

I would like to do a cambelt change, any help pointers or links.

Thanks in advance

Easy and straight forward enough if you've done any Peugeot cambelts in the past - any annoying thing with them from memory is that the timing pin hole for the flywheel isn't on the crank pulley but rather behind the starter motor, making what should be a very quick and easy job a little bit more fiddly and time consuming than it should be.

Nice and easy, just stick a 8mm drill bit in the hole behind the starter.

It's a lot easier to do with the starter off, you can get a bit of a rod and do a bit of jiggidy pokety.

If you buy a timing kit for about £15, it comes with a rod that you can get in the timing hole without moving the starter, other than that the rest of the kit is just M8 bolts, to lock the cam and inj pump pullies.

Be careful when running the belt as its easy to get the inj pump a tooth out, if this happens it will fire for a moment sound awful then stop.

From memory the worst bit is if you have to replace the tensioner on a 306, as its a spring loaded thing, and needs a tool making to hold the spring compressed while you change the tensioner.

every xud has the sprung tensioner, though the design of that and the idler changed around 1993, moving the engine up/down on a trolley jack helps wigth access to a few of the bolts, a ratchet spanner is very useful for some of the cover nuts/bolts.

being a non-turbo helps a little due to access at the rear corner by the M/C, all in all as Anthony said the Haynes manual covers it very well, and as tom mentioned, the timing kits are cheap enough and readily available, they make life a lot easier.
