Crooked Rear Wheel?

Recommended Posts

Guest Pingo

Hi,

I got a problem with my 205 GTi.. The right rear wheel has started to lean inwards the car, like negative camber.

I can also hear the wheel rubbing against the car when I drive through roundabouts etc.

What is causing this? Will I have to fit a new rear beam to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Kris

That will be a beam bearing problem, no way of telling any more until you get it apart, but be warned that you might find the trailing arm shaft and main cross tube scrap and needing replacements.

Very common and a search will reveal pages of information.

Basically, the beam beam bearings will have collapsed/disintegrated, and if it's now so cambered that the tyre is rubbing on the inner arch, I'd hazard a guess that the shaft will be grinding away on the inside of the beam tube and caused it to become oval, rendering it scrap. In other words, yes, it realistically needs a new beam - be careful of just putting another used beam on the car, as most original beams that haven't been rebuilt are usually also in poor condition internally.
