If you have a carb model, these are not used for anything. Back in the 80's - 90's the dealer would use these sensors on their diagnostic equipment to set the ignition timing etc.

If you have a model with fuel injection and without a distributor, the sensor is used by the ECU to determine the igntion timing when running.

not just carb models, most injection models as well did not use this for anything other than for diagnostic purposes.

Firstly, a 1.9 GTi uses a XU series engine - this was posted in the TU section (1.4 and smaller in 205's). I'll move it now.

205 GTi's don't use the flywheel sensor that sits towards the back of the block - it's only used by Peugeot dealer diagnostic machines for setting the ignition timing etc, and chances are all those machines have long since disappeared anyway. Beyond that, the sensor has no use and can be removed.

Non-CAT 205 GTi's don't use a crank sensor for the engine management - engine speed and timing is generated from the dizzy via lead and 3-pin plug that's connected to the side of the dizzy.
