Misfire & Running Issues

Recommended Posts

as above really, did search but couldn't find much really, but if i missed it someone point me in the right direction, thanks.

right, when cold my car misfires and struggles to idle without giving it a bit of throttle. its get worse when the weather is colder. but once the car has been run for a few mins its tends to be ok. i was thinking i would start by changing the HT leads and sark plugs and just fettle the ignition system.

i have just one other issue with the car. the idle seems to vary between 1500 (maybe a bit more) to 1000 randomly but not as in the car i hunting. it will normally sit at 1500 but if stood for a bit it will drop to 1000, but i have a feeling this could be the ecu water temp sensor i.e cold start as my car also seems to drink petrol!

i'm i right in thinking this sensor is on the right hand side of the engine above the gear box where a few pipes meet??

A bit of a misfire & struggling to idle for the first few minutes is pretty normal for the 205 GTI, many need gentle coaxing with the right foot for the first few minutes of running from cold.

They are pretty sensitive to decent quality & condition ignition components though imo so a fresh (Motaquip) dizzy cap, rotor arm & HT leads with some NGK plugs would help if they are a year or more old.

The SAD is on the thermostat housing under the dizzy, either on the Coolant temp Sensor housing or directly on the bottom of the thermostat body depending on the age of your car. To find it run your hand down the pipe which comes off the intake pipe between the AFM & throttle body that doesn't go to the oil filler cap & you should find it. The other hose to the SAD comes from the bottom of the inlet manifold.

What year is your car? If you have a single hose from the side of the thermostat housing to the heater pipes on the bulkhead you have the later one which should have the CTS in the back of the thermostat housing next to the dash senders but from your description you sound to have the earlier type with the separate CTS housing which you can find by tghe method above.

Graham.

how rude of me i never replied. my is '88 - E plate

as for my first post, the car seems to be setteling down now, and is much happier running at idle.

but it now looks like my ign amp is on its way out - after speaking to skip brown this seems to be my first port of call.

it misfires when cold when the revs are picked up a bit i.e pulling off. but its still easy to pull off, but the clutch probably compensates for this.

now over 5k rpm there is a misfire almost always there, sometims big, sometimes small.

any idea other than the ign amp of go with than?

again sorry for not replying, i must not have subscribed to this.

The ignition amp is a pretty good place to start (always buy a Bosch one). After that, try swapping in a know good coil.

However, mine had a slight misfire that disappeared after giving the spark plugs a quick going over with some wet and dry (bit of a temporary fix). As said before, these engines are really picky about having decent ignition components.

spark plugs are all NGKs now, and i have new HT leads but maybe swapping them again to PUG ones due to problems with the king lead! also have a new rotor arm.

AMP is the next place will be borrowing one off a local rally guy to see what happens

Heat transfer compound  either in the paste or jelly form , it's the same stuff as used on CPU processors so can buy one @ your local computer shop .. or if you have friendly AA garage nearby ask them cos they usually have loads of little bags of this the heat transfer jelly for ignition amps ..

And yes , it is important , without the paste/jelly the amp will overheat and burn out ..

right ignition amp has almost sovled this i still have little miss fires at the top end.

i've been told that it would be worth chaging the coil as they can drag eachother down.

also i have issue trying to drive the car under 2000rpm. sometimes its very easy to drive. sometimes its impossible.

would this be the TPS?

could be the TPS or the AFM, or a combination of TPS AFM and throttle body maladjustment.

i'm rather hoping its not the AFM, it sounds like that could get expensive....

someone has suggested getting the TB off and just giving it a good clean out, i think it solved it on there's

and a new problem to add after it being faultless all afternoon it wont start, infact it does nothing other than the injectors kicking in!!

i'm begining to hate this car. fix one thing another breaks straight away!

any idea as to where i should stat look tomorow?

i'll have to start by checking the wires i assume? nothing looks loose though to be honest

still no idea on this, i got it working again yesterday. i put the rubber cover back on the back of the starter and that seemed to solve it.

however, now i have the same issues all over again and can't figure it out.

i can only assum that the starter is getting no power to the solinoid. as its not even clicking in to start.

maybe i've missed a wire when i the lighting loom melted. i've repaired all that but i guess i could have missed something?

ant other ideas?
