Recommended Posts

M@tt

I just wondered if anyone has got any recommendations for code readers/scanners for < £100

Ideally something that would be compatible with both

1999 Mk4 Golg 1.6 Petrol

2003 MGZT CDti (Diesel)

cheers

And your point is? At the end of the day it arrived in a couple of days and it works perfectly.

I've one of those cheap plug in scanners, TBH I've found it quite limited as to what it can read. I have it now so I suppose I'd try it first, but my local bloke with a few grands worth of Snap On scanners in his van will come out and read the codes for £20 a time, he hasn't failed me yet.

You'll struggle to find anything that'll do both of those for that little cash, It has only been mandatory in the EU since 2003 for Diesels, and Petrols since 2001, unless you're lucky that they do run generic OBDII.

Your MG will have the BMW system in in which will be OBDII and they are not that cheap. My brother has a Snap on one that was a few grand which is pretty good, though I took my BMW to Quarry Motors in Sheff and they scanned and diagnosed and reset everything for me but it was £40. You need to reset a lot of things after a fault to clear the ECU so it is generally not the sort of thing you can do at home

I have a mac tool small scanner which was 80 quid which just really does the minimum EOBD vehicles. Its ok for a quick check but anything decent i get my new snap on solus pro (carbon fibre look) out.
