Galifrey 1 Posted January 8, 2010 Uhhh, thanks A gasoline engine will get very poor economy on E85 even an FFV gets crappy mileage, its production has had a profound effect on world food markets, particularly in poorer countries, and it creates acid in the engine which rots the seals. The exhaust produces Acetaldehyde which is a known carcinogen, eye & respiratory tract irritant and is ranked as one of the worlds most hazardous compounds. http://www.scorecard.org/chemical-profiles...ance_id=75-07-0 Even the most efficient Ethanol designed engine will get 10% worse MPG than an equivalent petrol engine, and the environmental impact is overated when you take into account the fuel used in production and pesticides. I just think its worthwhile mentioning its many downsides compared to petrol or diesel. Many supermarket fuels use 10% ethanol which accounts for why many experience worse (5% worse or more) mileage than they do on quality fuels. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

We have race series over here called V8 Supercars, which are essentially rear wheel drive Fords or Holdens powered by 5000cc V8 pushrod engines, rev limited to 7500, which make 600+hp on E85. The fuel is only very new over here and hard to find. So for the V8 Supercars series to stick their neck out and go green it can't be all that bad. I don't really like the formula myself as they outlawed every other make of car. Sandy 191 Posted January 9, 2010 I was reading about them recently Peter, something like 250psi BMEP from 2 valves, where does that sit on Dave Baker's second law?!! We've been doing some work with E85 recently and it's interesting for sure, but it seems that nobody really knows what the problems are, or they're not saying. The cooling effect it has on the charge and the cooler burn are significant factors, particularly on boosted engines. But the environmental case is about as sound as the MSA's for Catalytic converters on all post 99 competition cars; more an eco crowd pleaser than substance I think. It is not green as the emissions are worse than leaded fuel, and you have to burn more of it, so the fuel used is 10-40% more than petrol. The green thing is just a myth about the fact the plants that produce it, consume co2 as they grow, which they would do anyway, if they were being used to make food. In the interest of balance, if you get your car adapated for E85 it is possible that you can see some increased performance, but you will need to make big changes to your fuel system and engine and be prepared to use 40% more fuel to achieve that.
