Light Valve Springs For A Dummy Build On Xu10j4rs

Recommended Posts

Toddy

Hi

I want to check clearance I have @ tdc on a GTI6 head, it presently has Catcams single springs in at the moment, I therefore require something with just enough pressure to seat the valve when I refit the head with a used gasket to check the clearance.

TIA

You don't need a valve spring. Just put the valve in without any spring, retainer etc. Sit head on block, gasket etc. with piston at 6 deg after TDC. Then drop valve onto the piston. Use a dial indicator to measure the drop.

I hazard a guess that 6 degree after TDC is the point where there is the least clearance?

Thanks

The closest point for the inlet can be anywhere from 6-12 deg. depending on stroke, rod length, cam grind etc. There can be >0.010" difference between there and TDC. Enough for a close engine like the XU10J4RS to go bang.

I always use springs from some old RC cars when mocking up to see how much valve clearance I have.
