Synchro

Well I got bored and stripped a spare 1.6 box I had got.

Stripped it apart, took me longer than I expected as I didn't have any manual or guide on me, just started at it in the workshop.

Got all the gear's out after a bit of a faff and instantly saw something I didn't like when I took the end cover off.... never worked on a synchro box so excuse the technical terms missing.

This bit sure as hell looks a bit worn...

As Does this...

But what does surprise me (although this picture is bad at showing it) its warped, pretty badly too.

Wise one of the synchro box's. Technical terms matched to parts please. What do you see in terms of wear? I thought its meant to have grooves and 3 V's in personally, not smooth and hour glass shaped V's.

that's like fatty's leg!

must have crunched like a goodun.

They're meant to have 8 grooves and 3 slightly tapered slots, unsure of the actual technical terms for the individual parts, apart from the "synchoro" as a complete unit as you have there.

Mines worse than that donald ducked side! The others dont look that bad to be fair, could get away with them after looking at the price of 1st/2nd gears + synchro. 2nd being NFP aswell as the synchro. Also states a longer 1st gear than the one ive got (Service box 13/39, I've got 12/39)

Had a quick play with the calculator

Speeds @ 7000rpm

1st (12/39) 36mph

2nd (20/37) 63mph

3rd (25/34) 86mph

4th (29/30) 114mph

5th (37/32) 136mph

And reverse although not to sure on this as it has 3 gears although 1 is an idler is it not?

35mph

I do remember Miles saying something about the 5th gear buggering up due to the shaft nut coming loose, was it tight when you took it off?

Might of been a bit loose and worn a piece

Ed, if you are interested i have stripped and rebuilt THREE, well 2 and 3/4s of these BE boxes now, and now I find I don't need the Haynes book. If you need a syncro hub they are as Miles put it, expensive but I may have one or two kicking about for a goodly price... just give me a shout if you're ever passing.

And I don't remember giving Welshplug permission to use the pictures of my syncro hub up there..../\
