Maj Still Not Wanting To Play Ball

Hey boys and girls, havent been on the forum in a very long time so apologies all.

Not had many problems with the gti in a while; I have the same intermittant fault with the idle and cut out at lights etc that a lot of you have experienced. Ive tried well pretty much everything; new alternator, new starter, new battery, new leads, new distributor, new sparks, new new new...the engine looks..well new! Idle screw cleaned, throttle cleaned, breather hoses cleaned, idle control replaced, car has been 10k'd etc etc. I even had the engine valeted just to make sure :)

and it still stalls at the lights!

Oh well. This morning I had a more serious problem....the car runs for 10mins then the fan comes on, then slowly the car starts missing and then just dies. We've checked the battery...thats all fine, as is the alternator. However it needs a jump from the vectra to start her again. The battery is literally 2 weeks old. the alternator is around 2 months old. Somethings just not adding up. We wondered if it could be the wiring to the alternator?

Help would be appreciated!

Oh and HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!

Thanks all for reading

Zoe

could be a corroded multiplug in the engine bay. some people often bypass this to stop starting issues.

as for the cutting out, have you changed your AFM for a known good one? have you changed your fuel pressure regulator? or even the fuel pump?

Hiya,

hmmm not thought of that one, the charge has slowly dropped throughout the day...we've been checking earths and he's (my fella) been jumping it every 30mins to test everything, its gone from running unassisted for around 15mins to around 10seconds even with throttle, which made me think the wiring to the alternator was the prb. Whats the best way to bypass the multiplug?

Prb with checking the afm is i dont know any one else with a gti in lincoln, which is a pain! Theres only one or two that i have actually seen running...they are a bit of a rare site!

just checked the multiplug and it appears to have already been bypassed in its life before me.

Check the connections are all good is next step then (on the bypass).

Get a multimeter on the battery when running, the voltage should be higher with the alternator functioning correctly, around 14.4 I believe is normal.

It may be worth getting the car to an injection specialist to check the fueling is in the right range if you have changed all the ignition components.
