Advice Needed On Bucket Seat Mounting

Recommended Posts

rallysteve

I have just got myself a pair of OMP HTC bucket seats and some side mounts. The previous owner of my shell has already re-eforced it to take some other seats but my side mounts are not of the right dimensions to fit these. Here is what i have already:

And here is one of my side mounts to compare:

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

depends how capable you are, or how capably your welder is, I'd be removing all the original and added in stuff pictured and fitting something like this -

on the drivers side i'd probably cut the tunnel in a little too to allow the seat to sit central and lower.

like boombang did with his project -

Thanks, thats very helpful.

Do I have to buy two lots of those rails or can I just use some flat steel plate and steel box?

Cheers Steve

one kit per side :)

that was just to illustrate what I meant, for my brothers car we have some 25mm square section tube and some 3mm thick sheet to weld onto the sills where the rails meet, it cost us a fiver.

That sounds more like how I was thinking ;)

I will look into chopping a bit out of the tunnel when I have cut all of the old mounts out to see where I want the seat. I am fairly tall so the added head clearance will definitely be a bonus. Think my welding skills should be up to it. Will get plenty of plate and box to practice/

Many Thanks

Steve

I have done mine very similar to engine killers (I think I even used photos of his set up as a template :) ). I am 6’1” so needed to get as low as I could, which I did. The only problem I encountered which I had not factored in is that I no longer had room for the standard exhaust middle box (I did try and lower it but it kept grounding out) so I had to fit a Cherry Bomb silencer instead.

Thats the kit I've just fitted to my new road rally car . The slotted captive nuts allow that added adjustment to get the seat in the right position.

Well worth it

Don't worry, I copy the method from some senior members here too :)

You can see that I am actually using a smaller diameter mid-box from an Audi RS6 (one of two). I think it's a little larger and lighter than a Cherry Bomb iirc.

By the way, will flat steel plate for seat mounting be a bit risky?

Thannks guys thats just what I was after. Will get the other half to order me some 25mm box and steel plate from one of her fabricators on monday. I will cut all of the old seat mountings out first so I can have a play at where/how high i want the seats to be before I decide about how much I want to cut out of the tunnel. I will fit a home made exhaust system anyway so not too worried about the clearance but dont really want to start chopping up my shell which is surprisingly rot free and unchopped (aside from the cage  )

Cheers for the help. Will update my progress in my progress blog on here and PSOOC when I start.

Steve
