i know how they should work but never knew how they work is there a pipe on the engine somewhere that sucks the air out to open it,,then what refills it to seal it?? what goes wrong with them ? cheers

If you remove the scuttle panel you should be able to trace the vaccum hose from the servo, check its all connected and the plastic t-piece isnt snapped off. Will be the thin black rubber tube with a 1 way valve in it.

sorted ,tube was badly kinked as it came through the bulkhead behind the sound deadening .also discovered what the small glass dome was near sunroof handle , think its remote central locking sensor although i have no fob to operate it ..

Correct, all you need to do is find a matching fob and sensor, swap them over and it should work. You could also get the code off your original item and go to pug, but it would cost a lot for a replacement matching fob.
