Gti6 Oil Cooler...

Recommended Posts

fatony1

Is it a good idea to remove the factory oil cooler setup on my GTI6 engine and fit a sandwich plate and hoses to a seperate oil cooler rad? I have a 10 row oil cooler kit in my garage that would be nice to use :)

Thanks in advance

The standard heat-exchanger setup works well on the road and helps to get the oil upto temperature quicker, but in my experience it's not so good on track, usually resulting in both the oil and coolant temperature going up rather than keeping the oil cool. A proper air-oil cooler will be more effective for keeping the oil cool on track if that's going to be the main use of the car.

I'd be tempted to leave it with the standard heat-exchanger initially then, and see how you get on - it's not that difficult to change later with the engine in the car, and the heat-exchanger will be fine for occasional trackday use.
