Whats The Best Method?

Recommended Posts

Hello forum members,

Im after a bit of good advice.

I have a good low miles 1.9 engine that is out of the car.

What my plans are is to spend a day or two fully degreasing the engine and parts like the inlet manifold ready for paint.

Whats the best way to go about this?

I need advice on what materials to start with i.e best degreaser for the job,

Paint,my plans are painting the block red, head silver, inlet manifold silver, sump black and nice new black bbm hoses.

Do i need primer?

What red paint to paint the engine?

Spray paint or brush on paint?

What silver paint to paint the head and inlet manifold?

All i want is to get the best result diy wise.

Im also changing gaskets too.

Thanks in advance,Steve74. :)

The head block and inlet manifold are all alloy and paint does not adhere well. Personally I would not paint them, as no matter how careful you are, unless you get the surface spotless (difficult with all nooks and crannies) and spray on etch primer, the chances are it will start to flake off before too long and look a real mess.

The cam cover is reasonably easy to get clean and etch primer, and then spray in whatever colour. The sump is steel and can also be sprayed with success.

But personally I'd just get the block/head as clean as you can with degreaser/jetwash/elbow grease and leave it at that. The inlet manifold will respond well to a good rub with wire wool.

It depends what colour you paint it.. I painted mine silver so when it flakes off it doesn't look as bad. :)

The best thing I've found in my limited experience is Swarfega Jizer and HOT water (as hot as you can stand). I had the advantage of living in student digs (and therefore not giving a crap about it) so I did all mine in the shower. Something similar to that would be good. :D

Wash it off first, and get the worst of the heavy soiling off it. Then once it's nearly clean you can use the degreaser and hot water to get it clean enough to paint.

best degreaser i found is 'carplan' - tetroclean

brush it on and watch the grease fall off

a few wire brush attatchments on a powerdrill work well.

hammerite is a good all rounder, and works for me. i chose silver block and head with black sump

I;ve said it before so I'll say it again Astonish from the **** courner shop etc, for the money it cannot be beaten, Compare it to Gunk etc and it leaves it well behind

Paint wise the Alu look spray from B&Q is pretty good.
