Starting Problem - 205 Gti-6

Recommended Posts

springs

I'm having real problems with starting my 205 gti with a gti-6 engine.

Now with a fully charged battery which indicates about 14V on the bat it will start fine. Anything other than that and it wont start. If the battery is showing a lower voltage then anything other that a running car to jump start it off wont do it and the engine will just sit there.

Now what's happening is that i disable the immobiliser and turn the key, you can hear a relay click but the car wont even try to turn over. I've checked the main earth connector and other connections but complex car wiring is not a speciality of mine

Now i have a gti-6 on my drive as well which is for another car which has a partially charged battery and will turn the car over the eventually fire it up.

So im really not sure what i can do now. Its gotten to the point where its really annoying as when i put it in for an MOT they stopped it as they couldn't start it again with another battery and wouldn't jump it off a running engine..

Any ideas?

Badly wired imobiliser causing excessive voltage drop on the starter circuit?

get a jump lead and stick it on the engine somewhere close to the starter and then on the battery neg terminal .if it starts then with lower than 14v you know you have a bad earth.

if not get another jump lead and stick it straight on the back of the starter and to the positice terminal bypassing the solenoid if it turns over then you know the solenoid is bollocked .

or try sticking the the solenoid bypassing the live from the battery or use a multimeter to measure the resistance and volt drop

if not have you tried another starter or a load test on the battery

Ive tried different earth points today but to no avail. The battery is brand new and has been on another car for a few days with no problems

thinking about it if you say its not doing anything have you tried the checking the wire going to the starter the little one that switches the solenoid to make sure it works just unplug it and check it with a multmeter see if your getting power there when it the igntion switch is in the cranking postion

other than that do what i said earlier with the jump leads going straight to the starter and let us know how you get on

allso try brigeing the two big studs on the starter see if you get anything might be an idea to unplug the coils or coil to make sure it doesnt start just cranks

I'm guessing thats my next point of call..

dont suppose there is any easy way of getting to the starter motor on the 6 without taking the manifold off??

unsure about the gti6 but on my mi16 similar size i suppose maybe take the rad out then you dont risk damaging gaskets .just catch your water/antifreeze in a bucket and re use it

I was able to change the starter motor on my car from underneath without removing anything major (the rad or inlet manifold or valance etc), so it can be done... but it was very tricky. A 2nd hand starter motor should be cheap enough

Bypass any Alarm etc as they can cause all sorts of issues,

I;d say remove the mainfold as it doesn;t take long at all and saves allot of hassle of going in from under etc, Never use a S/H starter as it;'s not worth the hassle of them going wrong, Not saying a new one won;t but at least you have 12 months warranty on them

I'm not really sure how to disable the immobiliser. I got it with the car and no paper work of it. I'm not even sure where any of its located except the port i use to disable it when i need to start it.

I'm going remove the started motor and see if thats the problem.

|More than likely to be between the igintion swicth and the 2 plug's, Easy way around this is with another ignition switch

I'd say the starter motor is goosed. Had this twice now on my 205. Once with the 1.9 GTi engine and second with the GTi6 engine in it. You turn the key, the starter relay clicks away and nothing else happens. The AA man showed me a neat trick - get one person to turn the key and another person with a big thick metal pole to beat the starter motor with. This generally gets it started because its the starter thats sticking / goosed.

In the end I got fed up with it on both engines and just replaced the starter motor. No more problems.
