A Hole In The Gearbox?

Recommended Posts

Guest hux309

ok upon having a peek at the top of my gearbox i noticed there is a gaping hole right above the flywheel :D

is this meant for the tdc sensor or is there something more sinister...

oh and where on earth is the gearbox filler plug as i cant for the life of me find it :(

If it's a round hole at about 1 o'clock then yeah, it'll be the tdc one.

The filler plug is actually where the lift up cable goes or would go. Although.. it's much easier to use the level plug on the side behind the left wheel. This is the only 19mm one on the end casing. To fill up from here you'll need to get your oil in one of the bottles with the long necks. This is pretty much standard anyway.

If the car is level then when oil starts to come back out of the hole then it is up to the correct level.

That hole on the top (like a long rectangle) is usualy covered over by a plastic cover and does bugger all, the filler plug is on the end casing( youl see it with the NS wheel removed) and takes a largeish socket 19mm???

I think you'll find that hole is for timing the engine.

Peugeot supply 2 litres. But,you don't need or want to use it all. Trust me,no more than 1.7 litres. Otherwise, you will overfill the box & make the gear changes more obstructive. If you can,use a 75/90 synthetic oil.

Well good old Haynes (cue Miles) say to fill the gearbox til it starts to trickle out. I take it they're wrong then. As usual.

I have read on another site not to use synthetic oil in the pug gearboxes as it is too slippery, the baulk rings need a certain amount of friction to work.

Using synthetic is absolutely fine. Kris,it will trickle out after 1.7 litres.
