negative is my gut feeling, cant give a reason for it other than thats what i know friends have done / local car dealer does it to cars on his forecourt.

Negative first personally. Id remove the battery completely and put it inside though and charging it every now and again.

Ive always taken the positive off first. Not sure why but sure somebody told me a good reason for it once upon a time!

I always disconnect the positive when leaving my cars for a while, only it's generally thought that when disconnecting a battery the negative should be the first to be removed.

And when reconnecting the battery, particularly when it's flat/being jumped etc, always connect the pos. first, Earth last

Id disconnect neg first and attach it last. reason being if you drop the pos cable while the neg is attached and the terminal bridges over to a piece of nearby metal thats earthed then you get a big spark. More applicable to jumpleads tho iirc but I guess you never know.
