nick9one1

after loosing a brake pad and my brakes binding I've decided to rebuild my rear calipers.

Purchased;

Ferodo pads £14 helfrauds

QH Disks £18 local autofactors

Caliper rebuild kit £25 eBay

Red rubber grease £5

Brake cleaner £5

the rebuild kit has lots of parts and i only know what a few do!! anyone identify the others?

I will probably make a guide from this...

Good luck with this Nick. The guide will be useful to many.

I can tell you what I'd do with one of the rubber rings for few seconds, but then I'm a bit of a child.

Are you sure that's the correct kit? The "handbrake cable dust covers" actually are the dust covers for the sliding pins. The other dust cover and inner washer is correct, but I have no idea about the rest. I bought a rebuild kit from ebay and it only had the dust covers for the sliders and piston, and the inner ring for the piston chamber.

ok the kit I have is definitely correct. (Rear Kit Post 97)

Im replacing the pipes too (as I might as well)

but the only thing that puzzles me is springs and clips. There doesn't seem to be any that pull the caliper back away from the disk (as its a floating caliper)

how does this normally happen, should there be a spring?

They just adjust till they touch the disc and that's it.

springs and clips I would imagine are all for the handbrake mechanism though I've never taken one of these apart yet as I haven't come across a seized one yet, only broken nipples

haha broken nipples are a bugger.

so when you release the brake the caliper just moves away slightly on its own?

the reason I asked is there seems to be loads of fitting kits for the 306 rear

Caliper Kits

not many of those kits are brake caliper kits, most are brake shoe spring kits.

the pistons main seal is a square section, as the piston is pushed out by hydraulic pressure it twists, as pressure is released the seal pulls the piston back.

as the pads wear down the piston slides further out.

The discs will have knock off on them, they wont actually be flat say 2-3 thou run out. Therefore when you release the pad it will knock the pads back off the disc.

ah I see.

for anyone's reference the nuts on the rear pipes were 10x1mm

my latest problem is that only one caliper has the small L shaped metal strips and splitpins to secure the pads in position.

looks like they are available from here (first kit):BuyPartsBuy

what do the other four springs do?

Put the pads under tension to stop them rattling against the carrier body.

Normally the seal does that, runout on the disc just gets worse over age so not a good way to do it.

only thing is that you may need new pistons, as often the plating goes then the piston rust and then it damages the seals, so may be worth looking at new pistons if they are rusty?? me old man managed to get stainless steel pistons for his range rover.
