Just Changed Liner Without Removing Piston

Recommended Posts

Bally

After splitting a liner on my turbo mi16, I was a bit fustrated about having to remove sump etc etc. SO I got an old liner and an old piston and tried to fit it from above without a piston ring compressor.

When I rebuild motorcycle and atv engines this is the way it is done since the connecting rod cannot be removed from the piston without pressing it apart.

So with the test piston and liner I used a pick with a 90deg point and eased the ring in and the liner slid down, second ring liner slid down, oil ring was the hardest but it went down.

Okay so time to do it on the engine. Washed out al debris from the block, and blew it dry with compressed air,

Used a vice grip and removed the old liner. CLeaned liner seat and put oring on new liner, slid it over piston with piston at tdc and persuaded each ring in with the pick, it went down.

Slid liner into position, installed head and we are as good as gold.

Always a new way to do something.

Used to do the same with MX engines on my Kart, good idea!
