Recommended Posts

hi all, ive got a 1988 1.9 205 gti and i dont know if i should restore it to original spec or to smooth it out, as in photos (hope you can see photos, tried posting photos last time and didnt work). i'm swaying towards the keep it original but it does look quite nice smoothed. i would like to know what you think ??. cheers, si

Pictures aren't working.

Can guess most people like myself on here will say keep it original even before we see any pics! Smoothing of anything : bumpers, tailgate etc is a bit um chavvy imo. Keep it original, keep it real!

I just had a look on his album and actually the smooth thing just basically looks like a base model. so if you want to convert your gti to a base model then go for it.

The smoothed bumpers and trim painted the smae colour as the car can look good on some colours but smoothing anything else is a bad move imo.

I'm all for original on the outside, underneath do whatever as they look spot on as they are.

What DCC said! Makes it look like a base model.

Smoothing cars is wrong - keep it original.

Cant see the pictures. I prefer originality and I suspect so do most buyers, but its you car your choice and the end of the day

Like this perhaps?

It MUST be kept original - no questions asked, you would hugely regret it later I promise you.

the good thing about keeping it original is it never goes out of fashion, it only becomes a classic

Stick with the original arches/trim. as said afew times above smoothing just looks too chavy and will de-value you car too.

yep. i think i'll be keeping it original. would be a bit of a shame to change its design, and is true about smoothing would go out of fashion where as the original design will endure and be worth more original, all in all original makes more sense. cheers to all for showing me the way. all the best. and a merry christmas, si

Well, I say smooth it. The first thing I did with mine was remove that horrible grey slatted thing and smooth the tailgate.
